keep it on you!
I had a horrible experience while traveling abroad. While sleeping, a stranger broke into my room and took my ID, passport and money. (He left my credit cards.) I woke up soon after he left and found my most important belongings gone. "Well, at least they didn't take my credit cards," I said to myself. When I got back to the States, I got my American Express bill. Someone had taken two flights and charged them on my card. But how? It was then that I found out the thief had purposely NOT taken my credit cards so that I wouldn't cancel them. Instead, they had retreived my card information from a receipt in my purse. From then on, I decided that whenever travelling, I would sleep with my money and personal belonging ON ME at all times. Whether in my underwear, in my nightgown pockets or taped to my wrist, I vowed to never make the same mistake again. Unfortunately, you just can't take anything for granted when traveling. The safety of your own room is one of them. Eventually, I got everything straightened out and my money back in order, but it made the memory of the trip less special.
